The Day-by-Day Journey
Day 1: Into the Rainforest (Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa)

Elevation: 2,100m to 2,650m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
We pick you up from your hotel in Moshi/Arusha and drive to the Lemosho Gate. After registration, we begin our trek through the pristine rainforest. Look out for black and white colobus monkeys in the canopy. We camp at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp).

Day 2: Crossing the Shira Plateau (Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1)

Elevation: 2,650m to 3,610m | Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
We leave the forest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. As the trail steepens, you are rewarded with your first sweeping views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo peak. We camp at Shira 1 Camp on the western edge of the plateau.

Day 3: The Cathedral (Shira 1 to Shira 2)

Elevation: 3,610m to 3,850m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
A gentle day for acclimatization. We cross the vast, rocky Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on earth. We have the option to hike to the “Shira Cathedral,” a massive rock formation, before settling into Shira 2 Camp with a spectacular view of Mt. Meru floating in the clouds below.

Day 4: Climb High, Sleep Low (Shira 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco)

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m (Lava Tower) down to 3,900m | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
A crucial day. We hike up to the massive volcanic plug known as the Lava Tower for lunch at 4,600m. You may feel the altitude here. Afterward, we descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, known for its bizarre giant Senecio plants. Sleeping lower at Barranco Camp helps your body adjust.

Day 5: The Barranco Wall (Barranco to Karanga)

Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
We start the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall. It looks intimidating, but it is a fun, non-technical scramble. Once at the top, the path traverses beneath the glaciers of Kibo. We descend into the Karanga Valley and camp at Karanga Camp. A shorter day to rest up.

Day 6: Base Camp (Karanga to Barafu)

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
We leave the vegetation behind and enter the alpine desert. The trail climbs steadily to Barafu Camp (Base Camp). Here, the landscape is stark and rocky. We eat an early dinner and go to sleep before sunset. The summit attempt begins tonight!

Day 7: The Summit Night (Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka)

Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Summit) down to 3,100m | Hiking Time: 11-15 hours
The Big Push. We wake up around 11:30 PM for tea and biscuits. We trek by headlamp up the scree slopes, aiming to reach Stella Point on the crater rim by sunrise. From there, it is a 1-hour push along the snow-covered rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa!
After celebrating, we descend back to Barafu for a short rest and brunch, then continue down to the forest line at Mweka Camp for our final night.

Day 8: Celebration (Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate)

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
A gentle descent through the lush rainforest. At Mweka Gate, you will sign the official register and receive your summit certificates. Our vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a well-deserved celebration dinner.

Add-On Options (Upselling)

The “Crater Camp” Experience: For the ultimate luxury adventure, add an extra night sleeping inside the crater near the glaciers (highly weather dependent).
Safari Extension: Most climbers fly straight to the Serengeti or Nyerere the next day to relax their legs in a safari vehicle.
Zanzibar Retreat: Fly to the beach for 3 days of “R&R” (Rest & Recovery).
