Late June to October is the peak dry season and generally considered the absolute best time for wildlife viewing across the entire country. The grass is short (making animals easier to spot), and wildlife concentrates around water sources.
- The Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire)
Most visitors ask about this first, specifically for the Migration.
Best Overall: June – October (Dry Season).
The Great Migration Breakdown:
Jan – Mar: The Calving Season in the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu. Great for seeing baby animals and predator action.
Apr – May: The “Green Season” (Long Rains). Good for birding and low rates, but some roads may be muddy.
June – July: The herds move north through the Western Corridor (Grumeti River crossings).
Aug – Oct: The famous Mara River crossings in the Northern Serengeti.
Tarangire Bonus: Tarangire National Park is at its absolute peak from July to October, when thousands of elephants congregate around the Tarangire River.
- The Southern Circuit (Nyerere National Park & Ruaha)
This is crucial for Shauku Safaris given their focus on Nyerere.
Best Time: June – October.
Unlike the North, the South gets very hot and humid later in the year. The dry cooler months are essential for a comfortable luxury experience.
As the dry season progresses (Sept/Oct), the water sources dry up, forcing huge concentrations of buffalo, lion, and wild dog to the banks of the Rufiji River. This makes for spectacular boat safaris.
Birding Season: November – March. Migratory birds arrive, and the park is lush and green, though it can be hot and sticky.
Note: Many camps in Nyerere close during the heavy rains (April/May).
- The Western Circuit (Mahale Mountains & Katavi)
For the chimp trekking and remote wilderness experience.
Best Time: July – October.
Mahale (Chimps): In the dry season, the trails are less slippery, and the chimpanzees stay lower on the mountain slopes to feed. In the wet season, you have to hike much higher and harder to find them.
Katavi: This park is extremely seasonal. In the late dry season (Aug-Oct), the hippos gather in the thousands in the remaining mud pools—a sight you can’t see anywhere else.
Access Note: Light aircraft flights to these remote areas are most reliable during the dry season.
